[edit] History

Tekirdağ's history dates back to 4000 BC and it used to be called Rodosto or Rhaedestos. Rodosto as an ancient Greek city, was founded by the Samians. It's said that it was the part of the Thracian Prince Seuthes Kingdom back then. Because of its location, it was an important place for the Byzantines, too. When the Ottomans conquered the city in the 14th century, they called it Rodosçuk. After the 18th century it was called Tekfur Dağ ( "Tekfur" means the one who wears the crown and "dağ" means mountain), and later it transferred into the name Tekirdağ. With the 1923 agreement for Exchange of Greek Orthodox and Muslim Populations between Turkey and Greece, the Greek population left Tekirdağ.

[edit] Navigation

Tekirdağ is located at the northern shores of the Marmara Sea and it's 135 km from Istanbul. On the south there's the Marmara Sea, on the west Edirne, on the north Kırklareli and on the west Istanbul.

[edit] Weather

Tekirdağ is located in the Marmara Sea region and that's why it has a transitional climate between an oceanic climate and a semi-Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and winters are cold in general. It does rain during the Spring and Autumn and snows during Winter. The water temperature in the Sea of Marmara is also colder than the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, therefore the swimming season is limited with Summer time only.
