Tekirdağ is a city in the Marmara Region of Turkey. Tekirdağ is a modern city by the Marmara sea and located in Eastern Thrace region of Turkey.

Tekirdağ's history dates back to 4000 BC and it used to be called Rodosto or Rhaedestos. Rodosto as an ancient Greek city, was founded by the Samians. It's said that it was the part of the Thracian Prince Seuthes Kingdom back then. Because of its location, it was an important place for the Byzantines, too. When the Ottomans conquered the city in the 14th century, they called it Rodosçuk. After the 18th century it was called Tekfur Dağ ( "Tekfur" means the one who wears the crown and "dağ" means mountain), and later it transferred into the name Tekirdağ. With the 1923 agreement for Exchange of Greek Orthodox and Muslim Populations between Turkey and Greece, the Greek population left Tekirdağ.
Tekirdağ is located at the northern shores of the Marmara Sea and it's 135 km from Istanbul. On the south there's the Marmara Sea, on the west Edirne, on the north Kırklareli and on the west Istanbul.
Tekirdağ is located in the Marmara Sea region and that's why it has a transitional climate between an oceanic climate and a semi-Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and winters are cold in general. It does rain during the Spring and Autumn and snows during Winter. The water temperature in the Sea of Marmara is also colder than the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, therefore the swimming season is limited with Summer time only.

There's no train station in Tekirdağ center but one in Muratlı, which is located 24 km north of Tekirdağ.
If you're driving from Istanbul, you can take D100 highway or O3/E80 motorway (toll-way), and reach Tekirdağ in about 2 hours.
There are buses running frequently between Istanbul and Tekirdağ and you can find services available to this direction from other cities of Turkey, too.
In the summer time, there are regular daily boat services to Marmara Island, Avşa Island, Erdek, and Bandirma across the Sea of Marmara from Tekirdağ.
There's not much traffic so driving is easy around the city. Taxis are also available for please note that they're expensive.
Public transport system is mostly based on minibuses that run every direction with cheap fees. There are also city buses but they're not as frequent as minibuses.
Walking is highly recommended in the downtown area because it's a small city and that's why easier to explore on foot.
Biking is available in and around the city.
Rüstem Paşa Camii is a mosque built by the famous Ottoman architect, Mimar Sinan, in the 16th century. It is located in the city center (Ertuğrul Mahallesi)on the Architect Sinan Avenue. It was constructed in 1553 by Grand Vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent, Damat Rüstem Paşa.
Eski Camii (Old Mosque) was constructed in 1830 by the Minister of Agriculture, Ahmet Ağa and is located in the city center.
The Archeology and Ethnography Museum's collection is worth to see.
Tekirdağ province is famous for holidays with summer houses and camps. Şarköy, Mürefte and Kumbağ are particularly popular holiday centers with wine factories and vineyards. The old Greek village Uçmakdere is a must see location with its nature and beautiful sea. There's also a paragliding center close to this village.
Tekirdağ is famous with its meatballs called "Tekirdağ köftesi". These small spicy cylindrical grilled meatballs are delicious and can be found in many restaurants in Tekirdağ.
Tekirdağ Rakısı is famous for its characteristic flavour. It's said that the artesian waters of Çorlu (borough of Tekirdağ)used in its production, makes it different. It's made from fresh grapes and tastes sweeter than regular raki. Winery is also developed in Tekirdağ region. Local wines are offering great tastes with cheap prices.

Agriculture (sunflowers) and alcoholic beverages (wine and raki) producing industries are active in Tekirdağ but a valid work permit by Turkish State is needed for legal purposes. It's also a major port of commerce.
