Tarsus has been inhabited Neolithic Period and grown in importance because of its position along intersecting trade routes from Syria and Anatolia. As a provincial Roman capitol, it was the city where Mark Antony first met Cleopatra. The city is also renowned as the birthplace of St. Paul. It grew to be a center of early Christianity, the site of important martyrdoms and its bishops participated in the important founding conferences.

The main street is Adana Bulvari. The train station is west of town and the D400 highway is to the south.

The nearest airport is in nearby Adana.

Trains tickets cost 2.50 lira to Adana and 1.75 lira to Mersin.

From Mersin and Adana there are frequent dolmuses and buses. Tickets are less than 3 lira to and from both cities.

Dolmuses circle the town with a few buses, and taxis are available as well.

Tarsus Museum open 8-12 and 13-17 weekdays is located in a 16th century medrese.

The city's waterfall is a lovely feature.

Cleopatra's Gate doesn't actually have anything to do with the legendary resident, aside from commemorating her time here.

Visit the Well of St. Paul, Senpol Kuyusu. You can drink a cup of the water, believed to have special healing powers for 50 kurus.

In Cumhuriyet Alani, you'll find excavations of a Roman road.

Visit Eski Camii, which may have once been a church dedicated to St. Paul.

Tarsus is home to many interesting dishes including sagalm, pickled beets, tantuni, a grilled meat sandwich, and cezerye, a carrot desert. It is also one of the few Turkish cities where hummus is a native dish.

Gar Restaurant is next to the train station.

Şelale Restaurant serves kebabs and other local food near the waterfall. This is the most scenic place to eat, but be sure to check the prices first.

Daisy Cafe is another choice near the train station.

Haluk Abi has chicken sandwiches, tantuni, and other local food.

For a night on the town, you'll have better luck in Mersin or Adana, both of which have active nightlives. In Tarsus itself, your best bet is to to have a drink in one of the waterfall restaurants or visit the St. Paul Bar in Tarsus Mersin Oteli.

Hotel Zorbaz has cheap but decent rooms.
