Nevşehir is a city in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey.

Hittites were the first one swho settled on the slopes of Mount Kahveci in Kızılırmak valley. In the 8th century B.C., the Assyrians conquered the region and followed by the Medes and the Persians. In 333 B.C., Macedonian Alexander the Great took the control of the area. After he died, Cappadocia was conquered by the Ariobarzanes and then by the Romans. Under the Roman soverignity many churches have been built in the rockes and the caves have been used as protection shelters for Christians. During the battle of Malazgirt in 1071 A.D., the Seljuks defeated the Byzantines and took the control of the region. Later Karamanoğulları was in charge until the Ottomans took the control in 1487. They called the city as "Muşkara" until the early 18th century. When Ottoman grand vizier of Sultan Ahmed the 3rd, Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha re-built the city with new mosques, schools, inns, houses etc. its name was also changed into "Nevşehir" meaning new city.

Located in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey within the historical region of Cappadocia, Nevşehir is surrounded by the cities Kırşehir on the northwest, Aksaray on the southwest, Niğde on the south, Kayseri on the southeast and Yozgat on the northeast.

The airport is located about 30 km. away from the city center and there are busses, shared taxis and commercial taxis available to get to the center.

There's no train station in the city center but Kozaklı and Kanlıca stations are accessible via Ankara-Kayseri railways.

Getting to Nevşehir via highway is possible from the entire country.

Avanos, Ürgüp and Göreme are interesting places to see with churces in the caves and historical sites. The natural beauties and cultural wealth in the environs of Avanos, Zelye and Göreme have been attracting historical writers and visitors for centuries. The Haci Bektaş-ı Veli Complex is an Islamic architectural structure located in the Hacıbektaş sub-district of Nevşehir.

Nevşehir's cuisine is rich and the most of the dishes are made with meat and pastries. Here are some of the most popular local dishes; Biryan (Meat based dish), Nevşehir Mantısı (a special ravioli-like dish served with yogurt), Dolaz, Dıvıl, Gendime, Kayısı Dolması (stuffed apricots), Ayva dolması (stuffed quince) and sütlü çorba (milky soup). Potatos of Nevşehir are must be tried.
