In the ancient times in Anatolia, the region between the Meander (Menderes) and Indus (Dalaman) rivers in the south was called Caria and Mugla was one of the first cities in this Carian region. It's believed that Mugla was referred as Mogola, Mobella, Mobolia or Mobolla. Unfortunately there are almost no ruins to reveal the history of Mugla. On the high hill to the north of the city, there are a few ancient remains referring the location of acropolis. There are also some inscriptions in the city itself, dating back to the 2nd century B.C. and referring to Rhodian domination. In the 13th century B.C., after the Ramses II invasion, the Carian region was under Egyptian control. During the Trojan Wars, Anatolian tribes were defeated and the Dorians came to live on the southern shores in 1000 B.C.
In 546 B.C., the Persians took the control of Caria region. In 334 B.C., when Alexander came to Anatolia, he conquered Halicarnassos (Bodrum) and Mugla. In 188 B.C., Mugla started to be ruled by with Pergamum Kingdom. In 133 B.C., Attalus III, the King of Pergamum, bequeathed all his kingdom to the Romans and Mugla was under the control of the Roman Empire until 395 A.D.. By then the Romans were divided into two and the Byzantines was in charge of the region until 800 A.D. when the Abbasids made the region as a part of their Islamic culture. After the Malazgirt War in 1074 A.D, Mugla was controlled by the Seljuks until 1284 when Menteşes dominated the region. It was captured by the Ottomans in 1420 and remained to be called as the subprovince (sanjak) of Menteşe. By the Turkish Republic it was renamed as Muğla.
