Mount Ararat

Located in Ağrı province, the eastern part of Turkey near the Armenian and Iranian borders, Mount Ararat is a volcanic mountain that rises 5,165 meters (16,945 feet) high above sea level. It's considered as the largest single-mass or volume mountain in the world. It has got twin peaks known as the Great Peak with 16,916 feet height and the Little Peak with 12,840 feet. Most of Great Ararat is without trees, but Little Ararat is covered with birches. Both Great and Little Ararat consist entirely of volcanic rocks. There are no historic records of any eruption but with the findings of pyroclastic flows, artifacts from the early Bronze Age and remains of human bodies, it seems that Mount Ararat was active in the 3rd millennium BC. It is also known that it was shaken by a large earthquake in July 1840 and some sources say that there was an eruption by then.
Mount Ararat is said to be the legendary resting place of Noah’s Ark and a holy symbol for the Armenian culture. It represents the fatherland to the Armenians all around the world. It's mentioned in the book of Genesis as the resting place of Noah's Ark after the Flood. Therefore so many groups have explored Mount Ararat to find the legendary Ark for years. It's told in the Bible that the story of Noah's Ark is a revised version of an earlier Babylonian myth recorded in the Gilgamesh Epic which Babylonian story was based on a devastating flood in the Euphrates River (Fırat) basin. The biblical word that we read as "Ararat" could also be read as "Urartu". In that case, Urartu meant "a land far away", "a place in the north" and was the name of a historical kingdom.

Ağrı is 1414 km away from Istanbul and 1065 km. away from Ankara. 16-18 hour bus ride from Istanbul is in progress. Ankara approximately 12 hours. There could also be closed during the winter months the roads should not be forgotten.
[edit] Getting there
No matter what the distance to come to Ağrı is the most logical way to the airways. Trabzon-Erzurum-Tehran International Highway extends from the foothills around Iran. Between Ankara and Erzurum, regular air, rail and bus connections are available. Dogubeyazit is closest to the center of the mountain. Agri and Erzurum is easy to get here. Accommodation and restaurants in the city and the surrounding facilities are available. Dogubeyazit leaving the bus in general is set out in the morning. For this reason, not to stay an extra day bus for a few days before the return time to learn better.

The climate of the region is very harsh dry weather with snowing winters. Rainfall is slight in the area. Below chart shows the weather statistics for Ağrı province.

First people that climbed to Ararat which Marco Polo says impossible to climb for it is Prof. Frederik Von Parat in October 9th, 1829. From the climb was the first time after the second winter ascent was held in February 21, 1970 by the Mountaineering Federation of the former president Dr. Bozkurt Ergör. In the 1980s, thousands of climbers visited Mount Ararat. Climb the mountain prohibited in 1990. Federation to allow a group of climbers in 1998, this prohibition was removed.

Dogubeyazit town of Ararat is the closest point of Ağrı. Before and after climbing for your stay at the hotel there are many. Also worth seeing a lot of Dogubeyazit on the structure are hosted.
