Marmaris is a port city and a tourist destination on the Mediterranean coast, located in southwest Turkey, in the Muğla Province. The population of the city in winter period is about 30000, in tourism season this population can reach up to 300000. The city is famous with its natural beauty, clean and brilliant sea, night life ant sailing activities.

It is not known when Marmaris was founded, but it was called Physkos in the 6th century B.C. and was a part of the Carian Empire. According to the famous historian Herodotus, when the Carians settled in Mugla region, they also took over the town of Physkos. After 300 B.C., the Carian civilization lost its power and the area was ruled by different civilizations such as the Egyptians, Asstrians, Ionians and Dorians. In 138 B.C., Attalos III, the King of Bergama, made Physkos controlled from Rhodes by Roman generals.
In 1425, Ottomans conquered the area and built a castle in the city in 1521 AD. The Ottoman Empire Kanuni Sultan Suleyman changed the name of the city into Mimaris which eventually became Marmaris.
Located in the southwest Turkey, as a district of Muğla Province, Marmaris is situated where the the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea join together. This natural harbour, surrounded by pine-clad hills and forests, is also called as the Jewel of the Turkish Riviera.
It's 366 km (227 miles) from Antalya on the east, 165 km (103 miles) from Bodrum on the west, 120 km (75 miles)from Dalaman on the east, 5 km (3 miles) from Icmeler on the south, 320 KM (200 miles) from Izmir on the north and 55 km (34 miles) from Mugla the city center.
The nearest airport is 100 km away from the city in Dalaman. To come to city you can rent a car from Dalaman Airport or you can take the Havas Bus (which is the name of the firm that maintains special shuttle services from airports to city centers in Turkey).
During the whole year not only in tourism season, you can go to Marmaris directly from big cities of Turkey such as İzmir, Ankara, İstanbul.
The cheapest way to travel within the Marmaris is using Minibus's, also called Dolmuş in Turkey. Between İçmeler- Marmaris(center) and Armutalan-Marmaris(center), minibus's are working all day long. Also there are boat shuttle service between Marmaris(center)-Amos and Turunç-Amos.
Also you can easily find taxi but to get a taxi is the expensive way of getting around.
Marmaris has a typical Mediterranean climate. Summers are extremely hot and dry, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 35 °C, while winters are warm and wet with temperature that can go down to 5 °C at nights.
Amos Antique City Ruins of the Amos Antique city is in the Kumlubük district. Antique Amos theater that built on a hill at B.C 200, Chapel and numerous piece of sculptures are made up the Amos City. In addition to historical importance of Amos, it has charming natural beauty with its brilliant-sea.

Marmaris Castle is the most important historical structure in the city centre. Heredotus wrote that the city walls were built at B.C 2000 by inhabitants of Karia. The castle was built during the Ottoman Era at 1522. Inside the castle, there is a museum which is open between 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-17:30 during the tourism season.
Daily Cruise
The cheap way to see the bays within the Marmaris is to go with daily cruise programs. The tours take place everyday between 09:00 and 17:00 and cruises are taking off from the port in the city center. The program includes lunch and entertainment. On average it goes to 3 or 4 bays.
Water sports
Between Marmaris and İçmeler, there are a lot of points that you can find all water activities suc as canoe, parasailing, banana, pedalo, windsurf and water-ski.
Adventure Tours
There are numerous tourim agencies in the center and you will see their kiosks along the port. These agencies offer a wide range of adventure tours such as jeep safari and scuba diving.

In Marmaris, you can find various designs of hand-woven carpets and local carpets especially in Turgut village. Also there are some carpet factories which have retail stores within the factory.
There are large leather shops include various types leather products such as coat, pant...etc.
For general shopping, the shops are open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm in the summer season.
Hairdressing and beauty treatments are well qualified and not very expensive. In summer season, most hairdressers are open until midnight.
As a natural harbour, Marmaris Bay has three marinas with 1100 capacity, and nine yacht yards with 1200 capacity. Marmaris is not only famous with Blue Voyages but also with yacht festivals that are organized in this harbour. International Yacht Festival is organized in May while the week-long International Marmaris Yacht Races are held at the end of October.
Along the port, there are many qualified restaurants. One of them is Friends at the end of the port near the bedesten. Friends cafe&bar offer delicious meals to its customers. Çetibeli Çağlayan Restaurant located on the road to Cleopatra Island. This restaurant is known with its famous traditional breakfast given in the charming green landscape. [2]

Nightlife
Marmaris is famous with its crazy nightlife. In the old city, along the bar street there are over 100 clubs. All clubs are open until 04:00 Club Arena is the biggest one of these and during the night it has laser and various dance shows. The other important clubs are Backstreet and Crazy Daisy. Beware that the price of the drinks at the clubs are much more expensive than the cafes. Beside these clubs, there is one Rock Bar located in the middle of Arena and Backstreet. Mostly Pop Rock bands perform in this bar.
