Founded by the Lycians, Kaş was originally called as "Habesos" or "Habesa" in the ancient language of Lycia. Later the ancient Greeks called it "Antiphellos" (meaning "stony place") because it was the harbor infront of the city Phellos which was across from Kas. Antiphellos was an important port town during the Hellenistic period around 4th century BC and after 395 it became a part of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine). Later it was ruled by the Seljuks and eventually by the Ottomans. In 1923, with the populations exchange between Greece and Turkey, the majority of the population (Greeks) left the town.
