Kalkan is a harbor town on the Mediterranean coast.
[edit] History
Kalkan was not settled in ancient times, but the natural harbor was used as the only safe port between Kaş and Fethiye. During one historic battle, Romans and Rhodians both sought shelter from a storm in the harbor. It was also a convenient hiding place for pirates, who would prey on passing merchant ships.
During the 19th century, Kalkans, or Kalamaki as it was known to its mostly Greek inhabitants, grew in importance as a port along the trade route from Xanthos and Elmali. During the 1923 population exchange, the Greek populations was resettled as a community near Athens. In the 20th century the importance of sea trade decreased, leading to the gradual decline of the city. Many of the young people especially left to seek jobs in large cities, but the city has been revitalized by the influx of tourists.
