Göreme
Location of Göreme within Turkey.
[edit] History
Göreme was founded by early Christians during Roman times and first mentioned in the 7th century BC. The city fell victim to the Arab invasions of the region and most of the churches had to be rebuilt in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The Christian residents remained in the area until the forced population exchange of the Lausanne Treaty of 1923, when they were traded for Muslims living in Greece.

The main highway cuts through the middle of town, and the bus station is at the center of it. Across from it is the central square, where the tourist information booth is. Most of the hotels and restaurants are located in this area, while the old churches are further out.
