Fethiye is a city in the Muğla Province in the Aegean Region of Turkey with about 68,000 inhabitants (2008). Modern day Fethiye is located on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos, the ruins of which can be seen in the city, e.g. the Hellenistic theatre by the main quay. It is one of Turkey's well-known tourist centres and is especially prized during the summer.

In the ancient times, Fethiye was called Telmessos as it was located on the Lycian and Carian border. Looking at today’s existing monuments, it can be said that the city was very rich and a centre of prophecy, pledged to Apollon. The peninsula lying between Fethiye and Antalya was known as Lycia and the Lycians were natives of Anatolia. Even though there is not enough definitive information about the foundation of Telmessos, some written records show that it has come into existence in the 5th century BC. The city was ruled by the Persians, Alexander the Great, the Romans, Pergamum Kingdom, Byzantium, Menteşeoğulları Principality and the Ottoman Empire during its history.
Located on the Aegean Region of Turkey, Fethiye is coastal district of Muğla. It's 814 km far from Istanbul and 635 km from Ankara.

Biking is available in the city. You can also rent a motor-bike or a scooter to get around the beaches.
Fethiye has a Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers as well as warm and rainy short winters. During the summer time, temperature is approximately 30 degrees and over 10 degrees during the winter. The rain in winter helps Fethiye to be a green place even with a hot climate. Sea water temperature never decreases under 18 degrees all seasons.

Xanthos was the political capital of Lycian Federation. It's known as the place of people who committed suicide all together for peace and freedom when Persians invaded town in 546 BC. Located in Kınık Village on the road from Fethiye to Kaş Town, Xanthos has great samples of the Lycian Civilisation.
Cadianda is an ancient city, located at Üzümlü Village, about 20 Km. from Fethiye. In this historical area, there are great samples of Cyclops Walls of the ancient ages, a sport complex, theatre and Heroon like temple type tombs.
Tlos is located 28 km. from Fethiye and known as one of the oldest residential areas of Lycia.
Pınara was the "beauty center" of Lycians. It's located on the Fethiye- Kaş highway, close to Minare köy.
Gemiler Bay & Island has a beautiful beach surrounded by pine and olive trees.
High in the mountains above Fethiye, there's a canyon through the mountains, creating the famous Saklıkent Gorge. It's not only an interesting place to see but also a great place to hang out with rustic restaurants.
If you are in Fethiye, you should definetely see Ölü Deniz (Blue Lagoon) and Kelebekler Vadisi (Butterfly Valley). Ölü deniz is ideal for swimming and other water sports and located near the famous tourist resort of Fethiye, Belcekız Beach. Kelebekler Vadisi is situated at the bottom of deep and sharp of a Valley, which is one of the most beautiful bays around Fethiye. It's called butterfly valley because starting in the spring and lasting for about 9—10 months, you can watch more than 40 kinds of butterflies in this valley.
You can visit Kaya köy (Kaya Village), which is like a ghost town. It was abondened after the Greek-Turkish migrations when Greeks left the village.
Take boat tour to explore the coast. "12 Island Tour" offers an unforgettable day of sailing around the turquoise coastline and stopping off at several places for swimming and exploring.

Fethiye has a variety of restaurants with rich menus. Along the Kordon in the town, there are great seafood restaurants. Kebab restaurants are also popular with delicious kebab dishes. And surprisingly there are Chinese restaurants which are getting more popular everyday. Also if you'd like to try a regional taste, "otlu gözleme" is highly recommended. Nomad (Yörük) women, cook handmade lavash bread with herbs. Depending on your choice they add cheese, spinach, meat or potatoes.

Turkish rakı ( A strong grape brandy flavored with anise) is very popular among kebab and sea-food dishes.

Tonoz Beach Ölüdeniz [8] is located at a 62 km distance from Dalaman Airport and 12 km to the city center in Fethiye.
