Throughout history, this region has been settled by the Lycians, Lecs, Kavalı people, Persians, Helens, Athenians, Romans, Byzantines, Menteşeoğulları and then by Ottomans. The Lycians as one of the greatest civilizations of Anatolia, lived in the region for about 1600 years and the area was called as "Lycia" by them. Later it was called "Karia" derived from the name of Karios. In 1261, the Menteşe Bey, founder of the Menteşeoğulları Beylik (principality) took control of the Muğla region and held the city until 1390 when Ottomans took over the charge. However, Menteşe Beys took it back after 12 years. And finally in 1451, Sultan Mehmed II conquered and got Muğla back to Ottoman control. Two years after the Dalaman Airport started to serve in 1981, Dalaman became a town separating from Köyceğiz in 1983.
