Evidences show that history of Bolu starts with the Bithynians. Later it was ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, Seljukians and Ottomans. During its history the city was called Claudiopolis after Roman Emperor Claudius, Honorias in honour of Emperor Theodosius II's younger son Honorius. When Ottomans conquered the region in 1325, they've changed the name into Bolou or Boli.
Located on the highway from Istanbul to Ankara in Black Sea region, Bolu is surrounded by the cities Ankara on the east, southeast and south, Bilecik on the southwest, Sakarya on the west, Düzce on the northwest, Zonguldak and Karabük on the north and Çankırı on the northeast.

Tabaklar Bath was constructed by the order of Tavil Mehmet Paşa in the 16th Century and has two separate sections. Sultan Bath was constructed by the order of Sokullu Mehmet Paşa in the 16th Century. Süleyman Paşa Bath is located in Göynük District and was constructed by the order of Gazi Süleyman Paşa in 1335. Yıldırım Beyazıt Bath was constructed in 1382 and is located in Mudurnu District.
Announced as "Urban Protected Area", the Göynük District hosts a rich number of old Turkish Houses. The Mudurnu District is also announced as Rural Protected Area and has a rich number of old Turkish Houses.
