[edit] History

The exact story of how these carvings came to be and what they were supposed to represent is unknown, but they are of Roman origin dating from 200 AD. Some scholars believe they mark a death cult, celebrating the lives of fallen soldiers.

[edit] Visitor's Guide

The carvings feature armed warriors carrying axes, swords, and lances. Some of them also appear to have been drawn with their families, standing in nine niched frames like Roman marble tombstones with women and children by their sides. On top of these frames are aquilas, the Roman standard eagle. The figures include 11 males, 4 females and 2 children and 1 ibex. More ruins and tombs are on top of the cliff.

[edit] Getting there

From Kız Kalesi, follow the sign that says Adam Kayalar along the rough road eight kilometers past the village. The last two kilometers are on a footpath that leads to the gorge where the reliefs are on a cliff face in the gorge.

[edit] Eat & Drink

No services are available at the site, so bring whatever you may need along. The village by Kiz Kalesi is a good place to stock up on extra water.
