Cappadocia is the name of an area in Central Anatolia best known for its unique moon-like landscape, rock-cut churches and underground cities.
Fairy chimneys of Cappadocia The Cappadocia Region is located in the center of the Anatolian Peninsula, between the volcanic mountains of Erciyes, Melendiz and Hasan. The eruptions of these mountains which were active volcanoes in geological times lasted until 2 million years ago. A soft tuff layer was formed, 150 m in thickness, by the issuing lavas in the valley surrounded by mountains. The rivers, flood water running down the hillsides of valleys and strong winds eroded the geological formations consisting of tuff on the plateau formed with tuff layers, thus creating bizarre shapes called fairy Chimneys.
Even though Cappadocia is Turkey's one of the most popular touristic area, it is easy to find cheap and quality food, accommodation and locally produced wine. Some of the options to explore the region are visiting historically rich open air museums, trekking in the hidden valleys, cycling around the fairy chimneys or just chillin' out in a friendly cafe.
