No need to change money before going to Turkey. There are many ATMs, banks and bureaux de change also at the Istanbul airport. The exchange rates are best in town

It all depends when are you planning to travel. Winter months are less touristic and you can get really cheap deals on accommodation. You can find deals like 10 Euro for a bed and breakfast if you bargain at the location or on the phone.

Credit or ATM cards are the best solution to travel in Turkey. ATM and banks are everywhere, especially in the touristic areas. You can also use your cards for shopping too.

You do not need to exchange any money before you go to Turkey. There are plenty of ATMs, banks and also exchange offices at the airport in Istanbul. Exchange rates are better in the city.

Exchange offices are called "Doviz Burosu".
Usually they charge 0.2%-0.3% commission rate. Be careful it is not 2 percent, it is .2 percent. If you change 100 dollars, they will charge you 20 cents not 2 dollars. So their charge is almost nothing. But as a tourist trap, some of them do this trick.

using credit card can be tricky too.
you will be charged in turkish lira and then your bank will charge the worst currency rate to your card.
the best way is changing your currency to turkish lira. there are always commissions when you are changing currency but it is usually very low. %0.01 or %0.03.
be carefull it is not %1 or %3.
some exchange offices do this trick to scam tourists.

I agree with skip, in Turkey traveler's checks are useless.

My experience in Turkey with them was not good. most of the merchants
prefered money, even US dollars.

Do not get me wrong, you can use them, it just a little trouble.

use you credit cards. This way you save money, changing your money into lira cost more money. Also you can keep track of what you spent

Travelers checks are only easy to use in the hotels.

Forget the idea of travelers checks

Hi everyone,
I'm fairly new to the traveling game and am planning a trip for next year around Turkey. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice about what to do about money (e.g. taking travellers cheques, credit cards etc.) Any advice would be great.

Cheers

I understand your problem. My suggestion is travel with your visa or master card. Or even better your American express card. When in Turkey Travelers checks are just a head ache. But have fun.

Hi there

I was wondering if I could get some advice on carrying money when travelling. I will be traveling from New York to Istanbul. I have heard that travellers cheques are a waste of time as few places can cash them and when they can they charge over-the-top commisions. Therefore I was wondering if carrying a master debit card for use at ATMs would work best or if a pre-loaded credit card is better? Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks
